ALEPH NULL: INTERACTIVE GENERATIVE ART WITH THE HTML 5 CANVAS TAG

ALEPH NULL
http://turbulence.org/spotlight/alephnull
by Jim Andrews
Aleph Null is a new online work of interactive generative visual art
by Jim Andrews. Written in JavaScript. Uses the new HTML 5 canvas tag. Best viewed by the light of a full moon.
There's also a slideshow of screenshots ( http://vispo.com/aleph/jim ) to give you a sense of what it can look like in full flight. Aleph Null is color music. No audio.
It takes practice to tease the really good stuff out of it. It's like an instrument that way. Or a game in which the goal is to experience color music and create visuals you like. It's like hunting the Snark, beauty or butterflies. Unlike most instruments, Aleph Null will play something whether a person is playing or not. But it benefits immensely by a human player. It knoweth not beauty, is but the instrument of thine own incandesence.

Definition: API

Application Programming Interface

An application programming interface (API) is a particular set of rules ('code') and specifications that software programs can follow to communicate with each other. It serves as an interface between different software programs and facilitates their interaction, similar to the way the user interface facilitates interaction between humans and computers.

An API can be created for applications, libraries, operating systems, etc., as a way of defining their "vocabularies" and resources request conventions (e.g. function-calling conventions). It may include specifications for routines, data structures, object classes, and protocols used to communicate between the consumer program and the implementer program of the API.

Live Character Animation Using Maya And Touch Designer

"Frog from Maya into Touch Designer controlled by Logitech Gamepad interactively"

DMAX: DMX512 control from within Ableton

"If you’re a musician using Live then you can program in your light show in the same environment that you’re programming your music in. And because you can do it as you’re composing, the lighting can be an integral part of the music rather than something tacked on afterwards. When you're performing live, why rely on someone else to interpret your music into lighting events? Simply add DMaX devices to your set and program some modulation data alongside your clips. The effect of perfectly synchronised sound and light is very effective, and your lighting will always stay in sync because it's running from the same system as your music. You can also time events to certain MIDI or audio triggers, for example, by making a strobe flash on every bass drum hit. Outside of direct musical performance, one of my main uses has been to control lighting for dance performances. By importing the performers' backing track, and warping it in slave mode, you can see where the beats are and automate your lighting parameters alongside for beat-synced effects. These are just a few things you could do, the possibilities opened up by this integration are endless."

Python + Maya by Rodrigo Araujo

"It’s possible to access every attribute of any of the nodes on the scene, to create key frames and make complete animations through one script and to access many of the tools provided throughout the menus.
One quick example is how to create a bouncing ball animation."

Sony Smart AR

"Sony has developed integrated ‘Augmented Reality (hereafter referred to as ‘AR’) technology’ called as “Smart AR.” When capturing visuals through a camera on a device such as a smartphone, the technology enables additional information to be displayed on the device’s screens such as virtual objects, or images and texts that cannot be identified by visual perception alone. The technology employs the markerless approach, forgoing any requirement for special markers such as 2D barcodes. The object captured by the camera is quickly recognized and can be tracked at high-speed along with the movement of the camera, as it is displayed over the actual 3D space."

Milkymist

"The Milkymist One is an open hardware product that concentrates all the processing power and the interfaces of an heavily interactive VJ setup into one small box. With a unique combination of built-in interfaces such as MIDI, DMX512, analogue video input, Ethernet, OpenSoundControl and generic digital I/O, it gives you all the tools to create truly interactive performances.
With the Milkymist SoC, the project pushes the frontiers of open source further. While many open hardware projects are based on a proprietary and closed processor, at the core of the Milkymist One lies a custom embedded processor whose Verilog HDL design files are entirely free and open source.

All of this would never be usable by everybody without user-friendly VJ software optimized for running on the system. Inspired by the popular MilkDrop visualization plug-in for Winamp, Flickernoise provides a graphical tool that allows you to create, set-up and run the visual performances."

Compositing

"Compositing is the combining of visual elements from separate sources into single images, often to create the illusion that all those elements are parts of the same scene. Live-action shooting for compositing is variously called “blue screen,” “green screen,” “chroma key,” and other names. Today, most, though not all, compositing is achieved through digital image manipulation. Pre-digital compositing techniques, however, go back as far as the trick films of Georges Méliès in the late 19th century; and some are still in use."

Tutorial: Rendering Wireframes in Maya for Compositing with After Effects

"Crystal Leal walks us through how to render out a wireframe version of a model using either Mental Ray or Maya’s own Vector Renderer. Once rendered, the sequences are then composited together in After Effects and rendered out to video. This technique is perfect to use when putting together turntable animations for your portfolio!"

VJ Content - Five examples of Incredible Abstract 3D Animation

Element Future supports new media as a form of self-expression. In our humble opinion, 3D this good is wasted when it ends up in tv promo spots and cellphone commercials as a way of keeping the corporate image fresh, so it's a pleasure to find these 'unspoiled' personal videos from designers/programmers.

AfroMonk: What is the whole “Party.” thing about?

"PARTY started as an inside joke between myself & Steve Bugbee. He was shocked that B.A.D.ASS would only release limited information like date & city but not announce venue or lineup and still get over 1000 RSVPs on Facebook. I laughed and said “I wonder if people would RSVP if we just showed them a blank piece of paper that said PARTY on it.” We wanted to see if the idea would catch on so we tested it by getting the B.A.D.ASS & Slow Kids teams to set their default photo on Facebook to a picture of them holding up a blank piece of paper that had “PARTY” written in arial font. The idea started spreading virally as Steve & I found ourselves looking around the internet and people we didn’t even know had made similar default photos. That was when I decided we would make that my birthday rave….the main flyer was also a blank piece of paper with PARTY on the front and then we released the lineup & RSVP info on the back."

Micro Sites Make Moving Singles Magic

Indie dance trio Foster The People ended up in my RSS feed on recomendation... The Soundcloud download had reached it's limit, so I really wanted the single then. I had to email them, because (too bad) their domain is  an Adobe Flash micro site, and there is only an option to stream, join, or find a show date.

Clever.

Post Magazine December 2010: Embracing Interactivity

"Companies no longer rely on print and television spots to promote their brand. They need to find their way to the digital world with rich media Websites, videos, apps for handhelds and evolving technology such as gesture recognition."

 -Post Magazine

"Everybody is looking for a way to deliver a new innovative voice to their customers, and the Web space allows for so many different kinds of information to flow. You can create a social media touch point, or deliver a video online, or you can have a more interactive Website, whether it be a game, a microsite, or a rich media banner. There are just so many opportunities within this space to talk to consumers."

"We just did a piece for Lufthansa using gesture recognition. The technology has been around a while but now is becoming cheap enough that it makes more sense- Xbox Kinect is using it now. The basic idea is that a camera detects your movement allowing you to navigate around just using your body. Technology is changing so quickly that it's difficult to know for sure what is going to resonate with consumers."

"Brands are going to finally want to focus on how new technology can be useful and not just cool in the marketplace. These companies will look for partners that can bring both buzz and generate revenue opportunities."

Miraculously Meeting Madison House

I just ran into Carrie Lombardi, president of  Madison House PR.

Wow. They're looking for the kind of IMC, SMO and brand activation that Element Future does... pretty cool.

She said, 'sure, present something'. I think we will have to do that.

Transmedia

Transmedia

"In five years," Kring is saying, "the idea of broadcast will be gone."

"Right," says Lindelof. "Instead of watching Heroes on NBC, you'll go to nbc.com and download the show to your device, and the show will be deleted as soon as you finish watching it -- unless you pay $1.99; then you get audio commentary. You enhance it. It's like building your Transformer and putting little rocket ships on the side."
